In 1859 there was published one of the most influential books of all time, Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. Darwin's theory of evolution has been a major factor in the decline of Christianity in the western world. It has provided the ideal reason (excuse?) for people to imagine that they are not after all answerable to the God who created them.

The notion of evolution, however, does not stand up to scientific scrutiny, despite all its advocates in the media and educational system. 'Molecules-to-man' evolution rests upon the idea of new genetic information being created in a species through various 'mutations' which have been determined by natural selection. Mutations, however, only corrupt existing genetic information; they can never add new information such as would be necessary for the development of creatures into different, more complex species.

For example, evolution states that birds evolved from reptiles, but the new genetic information necessary for the growth of feathers and of the muscles for flight would not have been present in the original DNA of the reptile. So the transition is simply impossible.

The evidence of the fossils in the earth's geological strata is also soundly against evolution. Evolutionists argue, for example, that over millions of years invertebrates evolved into vertebrates, and fish evolved into amphibious creatures. If this were the case, then billions of instances of the numerous transitional forms should be present in the fossil record, but none in fact exist. Indeed, all the fossils are found to be complex creatures, already fully developed into their own kind. Fossils showing evidence of transition between apes and humans are also non-existent.

So man is not the result of some upward evolutionary progression. The opposite is in fact the case : he is degenerated from the perfection in which God originally created him. This is because the first man Adam chose to rebel against his Maker, and thereby lost the fellowship with God and the spiritual life which he once enjoyed, when God first formed him from the dust of the earth. All Adam's descendants, that is, all mankind, now share his corrupted nature, and need to be rescued from it.

The good news of the Christian message is that the Lord Jesus Christ has intervened in human history to effect this rescue. Christ has died on the Cross in the place of sinners, bearing the penalty which their sins deserve. Those who turn from their sin and come to Him for mercy are freely forgiven, receiving the gift of everlasting life.

Many people, however, never reach the stage of seriously considering their relationship to their Maker, because they have been led astray by the theory of evolution (taught as fact in our schools and universities, despite its many scientific flaws), and so do not even think that they have a Maker, believing instead that their existence is a mere phenomenon of a God-less nature.

How we must be wary of the power of fashionable humanistic philosophy to grip people's minds, making them afraid of deviating from the received consensus. We must trust instead to the infallibility of the Bible, which is the very word of God, and which shall stand long after scientific fashions have come and gone. Man is not descended from the beasts, but is infinitely higher than they, being made in God's own image and possessing an immortal soul designed for eternal communion with Him who is the omnipotent Creator of all things.

Let us close this very brief rebuttal of the theory of evolution with the following two quotations :

"We are all animals, descendants of a vast lineage of replicators sprung from primordial pond scum". 1

"God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it ... And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Genesis 1:27-28,31).
