AS A CHURCH WE ARE CURRENTLY

PROTESTING AT THE WAY IN WHICH SUPERMARKETS

ARE SELLING HALAL MEAT

WITH NO LABELLING TO THAT EFFECT

We have held two protests/witnesses outside our local Waitrose store, and have written to Tesco, Sainsbury and Waitrose head offices. We have also made representations to the local MPs and to the Secretary of State at DEFRA, and have had a letter published by the Daily Telegraph on this very serious matter. To see the letter, click on the link below and scroll  down to ‘Objection to halal meat’.

We love our Muslim neighbours, and always seek friendly co-existence, but that does not mean that we allow our nation’s Christian identity to be abandoned, nor that we ignore our consciences as to what we eat.

A handout leaflet for staging witnesses outside of supermarkets has been prepared (our campaign is not only a protest, but also a positive witness to Christ’s unique truth). This leaflet can be downloaded by clicking on :

Handout protest leaflet re unlabelled halal products.pdf

(A5 double-sided flier)

A more detailed leaflet has been produced, providing the essential Biblical background on the Christian position regarding animals offered up to other gods. We do hope that concerned Christian friends, and others, will find it helpful. Please click on :

Why, as Christians, we object to unlabelled halal meat sales.pdf

This leaflet has been produced in a 4 page, A5 format, and so needs to be printed off on the ‘booklet’ setting on your printer

We are particularly saddened at the way in which Waitrose’s Head Office have refused to answer questions put to them on the issue of Christian conscience. Instead, they are only willing to issue standardised responses on animal welfare and the economics of the meat industry.

These are five specific questions which they have refused to address :

1) Why is there no labelling or signage in Waitrose stores informing customers which lamb items have been slaughtered according to Islamic rituals, so that Christians (and secularists) can make an informed choice?

2) Do any of Waitrose’s meat-based pre-prepared meals contain halal meat?

3) Did Waitrose consider the sensitivities of Christians, when it made its decision to stock halal meat?

4) In its selling of unlabelled halal meat has Waitrose considered the reality of anti-Christian persecution in many Islamic countries?

5) Why does Waitrose not exercise its purchasing power to insist on adequate non-halal sourcing of the wholesale lamb market?

ALL ARE WARMLY WELCOME

FACING UP TO THE TEMPORARY

NATURE OF HUMAN EXISTENCE

"I am a creature of a day, passing through life as an arrow through the air. I am a spirit come from God and returning to God : just hovering over the great gulf, till, a few moments hence, I am no more seen; I drop into an unchangeable eternity. I want to know one thing - the  way to heaven : how to land safe on that happy shore. God Himself has condescended to teach the way; for this very end He came from heaven. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! ... Here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book"

John Wesley
